Why improving your looks should be a priority
To improve your looks is to look after all the physical and mental assets of your body. It is to exercise and feed your body well, practice good grooming for your personal appearance and care for your mental health. As a result your outer appearance is more attractive.
You may think that improving your looks is all about your visual appearance and maybe you feel it’s a bit vain to be thinking about improving your looks. But improving your looks is a mental game first and foremost.
Read on for 20 reasons why you should improve your looks
1. Self discipline
To improve your looks is a healthy act of self discipline. If you want to be good, great even, start with yourself. Go to work on yourself. You want to drop a dress size, tone up, wear better clothes? Start today. You need self discipline in your life, go to work on yourself.
Improving your looks is an act of self creation. It is you creating your life in this world. Taking the time for yourself is a creative process and a journey of self discovery and self understanding. Who do you want to be? What do you want to wear that person? How do you want to look as that person? Use the act of self creation to better understand yourself. Try using an inspiration folder to up your levels of creativity.
3. To improve your looks is a journey only you can take
Improving your looks is a unique process. No-one can do this work for you. You can start that journey any time. As you embark on that journey you learn more about yourself, who you are, what you want in life. 4. To improve your looks is a journey into self awareness
You begin to learn so much about yourself on this journey. Improving your looks is self awareness. Engage with your body and mind and become more self aware. If you sit on the sofa and eat biscuits all day there will be very little self awareness. Only self indulgence and maybe some self loathing. But if you start to exercise and practice good grooming habits you will get in touch with you. For further reading, check out this post on self awareness and setting intentions.
5. Improving your looks is a journey of self discovery
Once you have become consciously aware of yourself you are ready to embark on a journey of self discovery. Who are you? Do you know yourself? Taking the time to consider how you want to wear your hair, what kind of clothes you want to wear is to better understand yourself. If you don’t know how you want to wear your hair, or what kind of clothes you want to wear, then an exciting journey of self discovery awaits.
6. Take a challenge
Improving your looks may prove to be a challenge. It’s going to take a little time and effort. Are you up for that? You might answer questions like, “What is your personal style?” with ‘I don’t know.’ But the fact of improving your looks will be reliant on you deciding that ‘I don’t know’ is not the answer. It might seem easier not to answer the question and coast along without making an effort to discover who you are. But are you up for the challenge of discovering who it is that you really are, and are you up for the challenge of becoming that person?
7. Becoming more organised
Improving your looks is organisation. If you wear the same clothes every day, think you have nothing to wear but your wardrobe is packed so tightly you can’t actually get any clothes out, you need some organisation in your life [links to wardrobe detox].
8. Developing life skills
Improving your looks is a daily life skill. Life is a little bit like Girl Guides for adults. You collect badges on the way and do activities to earn the badges! The ‘get a job’ badge, followed by the ‘Get a promotion’ badge. Well, turns out there’s an ‘Improve your looks’ badge too. It’s a life skill so you may need to learn the skill to get the badge.
9. Learn to engage with your own life
Starting to improve your looks is to begin to engage in your own life. Much of our lives is lived on autopilot. This is not a bad thing in itself, it stops the brain from being over tired constantly. Many of the routine tasks you have performed today you won’t remember because you performed them on autopilot.
10. Get that promotion
You know the adage, ‘Dress for the job you want, not for the job you’ve got’? Well the only way to do that is to up your level of personal grooming, and for that you will need to improve your look. Maybe not a radical rethink of your personal style, but certainly you will need to be able to take your personal looks and grooming to the next level. If you look at women who have stepped into new and more challenging jobs/careers you will almost certainly see that they have upleveled their personal grooming. Often they have not radically altered their look, but honed it and refined it until it is a more polished version of how they looked before.
11. Change your looks, change your life
Do you want to make a big change in your life, but don’t know what or don’t know how? Start to change up the routine of your life. Take up different hobbies, cook different food, go to art galleries, take a road trip, whatever you can do to change your life. And especially change your looks. Who knows what path will open up to you?
12. Stop playing safe
From time to time we get caught up in the treadmill of life. We find a look that suits us, clothes that suit us. It becomes habit and routine to dress in the same way each day and for each special occasion. Changing your look is a way of halting the treadmill so that you don’t get stuck in the rut of playing safe.
13. Rescue yourself from boredom
Wearing the same clothes each day, styling your hair in the same way, driving to work along the same route, eating the same meals. Our wonderful life can easily be reduced to humdrum boredom. Rescue yourself from boredom and change your look
14. Go on an adventure
Who would you be if you dressed differently, looked different and had the opportunity to live life differently? Improving your look gives you that opportunity.
What is it that you want to do but daren’t do? Become the person that would do it. One way to become that person is to embody her. And an easy way to start to embody a new aspect of your character is, yes you’ve guessed it, improve your looks.
15. Take control of your life
It’s not someone else’s fault, it’s not the other person, it’s not your mother, the dog, the children or your best friend.
It boils down to you. Take control of your own life. If you feel like life is out of control I have a great tip for you. Dress like a person who is in control of their life. Improve your looks and take control.
16. Find a new partner
Do you want a change in your personal life and are ready to meet someone new? Firstly wear clothes that you feel good in, because positive people attract positive people and circumstances into their life. But secondly change your look, wear different clothes. What you are doing is changing the energy around yourself. And that can be very attractive when people meet your for the first time.
17. Learn to think differently
You will think and feel differently if you are dressed in jeans, compared to a white lab coat, compared to a a beautiful silk ball gown. There are plenty of studies that show this to be the case.
If you need a renewed vision for an old problem or are facing challenges that you can’t resolve, or are going through a hard personal time, then uplevel your looks. It may be that the change which comes from improving your personal style is enough to unlock the answer to the problem you are facing.
18. Challenge self criticism and negativity
It’s very easy to get caught in a circle of self criticism and negative self talk. You think you’re not good enough, not pretty enough, not intelligent enough. Taking the steps to improve your looks is like throwing a spanner into the works of all the critical thinking. When you start to improve your looks you begin to take an objective view of yourself. Rather than think negative thoughts, you start to think about what you like and don’t like about yourself and what you want to change. Negative thought chatter is the bane of some our lives so take steps to nip it in the bud.
19. Improve your looks, improve your mental health
Improving your looks builds a sense of self worth and self acceptance, both of which are vital pillars for good mental health. If you feel emotionally low and vulnerable then take extra care with your appearance, wear clothes that you love, style your hair and wear some make up. It will make a difference to those vulnerable and low emotions.
20 Difficult day ahead, get dressed up
Finally if you have a difficult day ahead then be prepared and improve your looks. At least you will be in the right mindset for the difficult day and, who knows, it could turn out to be easier than you imagine.
